There are a lot of good things to be said about Rollors.
- Unpacking the game we noticed that the carrying case included seems to be very well made, like it might even last a while, a nice difference from so many other game cases we come across.
- The size is small, and the whole set weighs in at about 3 lbs, making it very easy to bring about anywhere.
- The game setup is easy and quick. There are no poles to pound in the ground like horseshoes, no heavy boards to lug around, or PVC ladders to set up. Just place the wooden pyramids 25' apart, grab the discs and play. The Rollors game does not have an included measuring rope or device, but stepping off the distance worked fine, and can be changed for more or less experienced players or younger children very quickly.
- Score keeping is relatively easy, similar to horseshoes but using the numbers on the disks as well. We found, as with many outdoor games, this greatly helps the younger players develop basic math and number skills, they want to learn how to keep score!
- The pieces are all wood, and appear to be very well made and long lasting, another nice change from many of the plastic games out today that fall apart after a few uses.
- The game can be played on about any flat surface. Shorter grass is better than longer, so we recommend a good mow at least a few days before playing. Sand is a good playing surface as long as it is flat, lots of deep footprints can make rolling the disks a bit erratic, but it adds a bit of luck to the game so is still fun. The area close to the water was ideal for playing, keeping far enough away to keep the disks from washing away. Any flat dirt surface is perfect, as is indoors if you have enough room.
What's Included:
The set included 2 pyramid shaped targets, 6 rollors disks, 3 red and 3 blue, with numbers on both sides, the carrying case, a 5' measuring rope, and rules and instructions.Game Setup:
As stated above, setting up the game was very easy. Set one target down, step off about 25', and set the other target down and your ready!
Rules and Game Play:
Each Player grabs 3 disks of the same color and decides who goes first. Official rules state blue goes first, we rolled 1 disk each, closest to the target went first. Standing behind a line from the front edge of a target, roll the disks toward the other target. Throwing the disk is not allowed, the disk should touch the ground within 4 feet. The first player rolls all 3 rollors, then the next player goes.
Scoring
Only player receives points each round of play, the player with the disk closest to the goal. A measuring cord is included to assist in determining who is closest if there is a dispute, If both players have a disk the same distance from the target it's ruled a tie, no points are awarded that round. The player closest scores for all disks rolled as long as they are within 5' of the target.
Points
Points are awarded depending on how the disk lands. If it falls, the number showing is the number of points awarded. If it stops while still standing up, the sum of both sides is awarded. If it is leaning on the target, 2X the number showing is awarded.
Winning the Game
The first team or player to 21 or over wins the game. The player or team must be at least 2 points ahead of the trailing opponent, or the game continues until 1 team or player is more than 2 points ahead.
Overall Thoughts on the Game
Rollors is a unique new game, a lot of fun, great for all ages, very portable and easy to set up, easy to learn, and has a level of skill and luck during game play. We highly recommend it for backyard events and family game days.
